TRAIL RATINGS

 

LEVEL 1:  Easy hike. Suitable for most people. Typically: easy climbs, easy grades, and good trail conditions.

 

LEVEL 2:  Average hike. Suitable for most hikers. Typically: moderate climbs, moderate grades, and average trail conditions.

 

LEVEL 3:  Intermediate hike. Suitable for fitter hikers. Typically: harder climbs, steeper grades, longer distances, and rugged trail conditions. 

 

LEVEL 4:  Strenuous hike. For the more adventurous. May contain: steep, high climbs, long distances, or poor trail conditions.

SEPTEMBER 1-WEDNESDAY-6PM-MASSILLON LINCOLN PARK (17TH STREET) Level 2, 5 miles (RR if open) Meet at Massillon Lincoln Park, 644 17thStreet NW at Lincoln Park Ave. NW in Massillon.  Get to Massillon via Rt. 21 .  Take Cherry Ave. west from Rt. 21 and then turn left onto 17th St   Hike the Sippo Valley Trail.

SEPTEMBER 5-SUNDAY-2PM-THE LEDGES--Level 3, 5 miles  (RR) Meet at the Octagon Parking Lot.  Directions: North on I77/8, exit onto Steeles Corners Rd. Turn left.  Go to State Rd.  Turn right.  Continue past Buckeye Sports to Truxell Rd. - and turn left.  Pass Appalachian Outfitters and go until you see the Octagon parking lot on the right. We will hike the Ledges, Haskell, and the Pines

SEPTEMBER 8-WEDNESDAY-10AM-SIPPO EXPLORATION GATEWAY- Level 2, 5 miles  (RR at library)

Meet at the first parking lot on the right as you arrive at Exploration Gateway.  Hike on the trails around the lake including down to the marina and to Sanders Center.  Directions:  Get to the intersection of 12th St. NW and Perry Dr. NW.  Go west on 12th St. to entrance to Exploration Gateway at Sippo Lake Park on the left.  Call for further directions if necessary.  There are many ways to get to 12th and Perry.

SEPTEMBER 8-WEDNESDAY-6PM-JOHN GLENN TRAILHEAD/WARMINGTON RD. BETWEEN MASSILLON AND NAVARRE-  Level 2, 5 miles  (RR) Meet at the Warmington Rd. parking lot on the south side of the road.  Directions:  Take Rt. 21 south out of Massillon to Warmington Rd. and turn right (west) to the parking lot on the left. We will hike the towpath.

SEPTEMBER 11-SATURDAY-10AM-THE WILDERNESS CENTER  -Level 3, 5 miles  (RR) Meet at the Wilderness Center in Wilmot.  Meet in the lower parking lot.  Directions:  Take Rt. 62 west to Wilmot.At first  light turn right onto Rt. 250.  Go straight through the next light, go about a mile.  Then just across a bridge is the sign for the Wilderness Center on the right.

SEPTEMBER 15-WEDNESDAY-6PM-RIDGEWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD- Level 2, 5 miles Meet at the 25th St. Branch of the Stark County District Library close to the intersection of 25th St. NW and Market Ave. North.

SEPTEMBER 18-SATURDAY-10AM-CAMP TUSCAZOAR-BUZZARDS’ ROOST  Level 4

5 miles  (RR along the way) Meet at the parking lot at the entrance for Camp Tuscazoar.  Directions:  Take I77 south to Bolivar/Zoar exit.  Take Rt. 212 left (east) through Zoar to Rt. 800, turn left (north), go a short distance, turn right (east), go over a bridge, turn right onto Boy Scout Rd. and go to camp entrance on the right.

SEPTEMBER 21-*****TUESDAY****6PM-CANTON TRACK/STADIUM PARK- Level 2, up to 3 laps (1 lap is 1.5 miles) (RR)   Meet at the Garden Center Parking Lot.  Directions:  Enter the park from 12th street and pass the lot we used to use for this hike and go on to the Garden Center Lot.  Come try a Tuesday nite hike!

SEPTEMBER 22-WEDNESDAY-10AM-BOETTLER/SOUTHGATE PARK-Level 2, 5 miles  (RR) Meet at the parking lot just after the basketball court.  Directions:  Take I77 to the Portage Rd. exit.  Go west on Portage to Wales Rd.  (241)  Turn right on Wales and go north to Green to Boettler Park on the left. There is an orthodox church on your right. Turn left into the park.  Take the first road on your left just before you reach the basketball court to the parking area.

SEPTEMBER 25-SATURDAY-10AM-  MOHICAN STATE PARK-Level 3 to 4  7 miles/12 mile option. Meet at the Class A campgrounds. .  Route 03 and 97.  Trails and hills.   Directions:  Take Rt. 30 to Wooster, exit onto Rt. 3 and go south to Loudonville. Go through  Loudonville to the intersection of Rt. 97.   Park at the Class A Campgrounds check-in station, which is northwest of the Rt. 3 and 97 intersection.  (CALL GREG FOR MORE DETAILED DIRECTIONS!)   Bring your lunch.

SEPTEMBER 26-SUNDAY-2PM-ME AND MY DOG HIKE-HOOVER COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER-Level 2, 5 miles Meet at the parking lot for the complex by the Little League Soccer Fields.  Directions:  From the square in North Canton, take East Maple St. for 1.2 miles to the first ball field parking lot on the left.  We will hike the trail behind the fields and the walking track at Washington Square.   Restroom at Starbucks or Jimmy John’s.  Bring a dog or not…..

SEPTEMBER 29-WEDNESDAY-6PM-JACKSON PARK –Level 2, up to 4 laps (RR) Meet at the parking lot at the Jackson Park Track by the gazebo and pond.  Directions: Reach it from Fulton Rd. (687) or Wales Rd. (241).  Parking lot is ½ mile west of Wales Rd.on the right.

NORTH BEND STATE PARK   CAIRO, WV    October 15-17, 2010

 

Kathy Tatarsky has arranged for a North Bend weekend this October 15-17.  She has booked 9 rooms priced at $77. plus tax.  Seniors 60 and over get a 10% discount.  The 3rd and 4th persons per room are $6. each per night.  Call the desk at 304 643 2931 and mention Hilltop Hikers.  Several rooms have already been taken, so call now.  We may need to triple or quad up depending on demand for this hike. Camping may also be available.   Bring bikes if you want.
